The Oceania Sprint Distance and Relay Championships, as well as the Australian Long Distance championships are taking place 40 kms east of Cooma, NSW will be organised by Orienteering ACT. The same Parking and Assembly area will be used for all three events, on a sheep farming property, Gaerloch, owned by Craig and Susan Mitchell. Most of the road is good bitumen. Only the last few kilometres to Gaerloch are unsealed and the road of about four kilometres through Gaerloch is a typical farm road.
Terrain Description
The terrain varies from relatively flat to some steep hills with complex outcrops of granite boulders, areas of bare rock, significant termite mounds (ant hills 1.0 to 1.5 metes), subtle gullies, spurs and knolls, with vegetation varying from some thick undergrowth to normal runnability and some open areas for fast running.
The area was first used for the 1989 Australian 3-Days, with the next major use being the 2000 World Cup and Day 3 of the 2000 Australian 3-Days, followed by the 2001 Australian Long Distance and Relay Championships. The areas being used the Oceania Championships have not been used for a major event, ie a Group A event as defined in the Orienteering Australia Competition Rules, since then. Parts of the area have been used for ACT events in the past decade (none since May 2008), but previous experience in the area will not provide a significant advantage because:
- Oceania Sprint Distance Championships. It will be the first use of a Sprint Distance scale map in the area and thus the perspective will be much different.
- Australian Long Distance Championships. The area has changed in terms of fences, roads, under storey vegetation, etc, much of the area has not been used for a decade, and the mapped area will extended.
- Australian Relay Championships. The area has changed in terms of fences, roads, under storey vegetation, etc.
